Welcome to the November edition of 'The Lookout'

Tēnā koutou,

Welcome to The Lookout, bringing you a global perspective on issues that matter. In this edition, we put In Focus In Favour of Pure Science, the Aspen Institute's initiative on investigating and analysing the state of pure science globally. We think you will find the report and the ensuing symposium both engaging and thought-provoking, highlighting the importance of pure science in advancing civilisation.

Followed by Leadership In Action with Bloomberg CityLab 2022, the annual collaboration between Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Institute looks at the challenges cities face regarding climate, infrastructure, technology, and more. Plus, an In Depth look at the Institute's new series on Strengthening Trust and how we can rebuild trust in a society that has recently fractured.

In the new year, join us in Queenstown for the Aspen Summer Series on Geopolitical Challenges in our region and what it means for New Zealand. Three separate forums on Indo Pacific, North Asia and lastly, Great Power Rivalry with experts in foreign relations, security and defence, including Sir Don McKinnon, former NZ Ambassador to U.S. Rosemary Banks, Prof Robert Patman and John McKinnon, chair of NZ China Council. Followed by the eighth seminar in our Future Challenges Series on Democracy, Digital Media and AI Challenges in March. Registrations are now open with limited spaces available.

You will also find the usual hand-picked selection of in-depth analyses, moderated discussions, event invitations and prize-winning publications from a range of international viewpoints. We invite you to curate your own content in a way that works for you and share it with your friends. We hope you enjoy it.

Ngā mihi - Christine and the Aspen Institute NZ team
